Melbourne peeps,

The Astor Theatre is screening 'Grindhouse' as it was intended to be shown, as a double-feature, with intermission and scratched treatment. I'm going to be buying tickets for the 7:30pm session on Thursday, 27th March (next week). If anyone else is interested in coming along with us, let me know and I can arrange tickets (not sure if you're able to book them, but I'm going to buy a bulk lot).

I'm pretty excited about this because I was highly disappointed when I heard they were splitting the films up due to the fact the double-billing wasn't making "enough" profit over in the states. I'm a bit of a purist and I like to see things the way they were intended.

For those who don't know anything about Grindhouse, you can find more information on its IMDB page and a more detailed rundown here. The films themselves (by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino) are schlocky, fun, and have garnered some pretty decent reviews. The trailers during intermission should also be excellent, one done by Rob Zombie (House of 1000 Corpses), another by Edgar Wright (Spaced/Shaun Of The Dead/Hot Fuzz - he's already one of my favourite 'indie' directors) and one by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever).

Anyone wanna come along? :)

I'm playing Phoenix Wright 3, and this is the joke I just got hit with:

Maya: "Umm, would you mind taking a look at this?"
Basil: "I'm sorry. That data is SuPer-Admin Restricted Desktop Access password-protected."
Maya: "SuPer-Admin Restricted Desktop Access password-protected!? What!? This is madness!"
Phoenix: "No, Maya, that is SPARDA."

I laughed and groaned, all at the same time. :)

Went and saw this on Saturday afternoon. It was everything I was expecting - massive explosions, a heap of bullets, implausible survivability by the main characters, blood stains that don't stay the same place from shot to shot/scene to scene, and overall just a damn heap of fun! And it certainly delivered in spades.

I'm happy to overlook non-blood continuity and the "yeah right, what are the chances?" moments, because they're part and parcel of an action flick. The WORST moment in the film was a piece of truly shocking editing, which I'm pretty sure was due to bad planning. The film cuts between a wide shot where we see Bruce Willis and Justin Long, Bruce close to camera and Justin a few meters back, and a tighter mid-shot of Justin. For about 5 - 10 seconds, none of Justin's dialogue synchs to his lips. I hope the director cringes every time he sees that scene - it was sloppy planning. I choose to believe the editor had no choice but to make the most of what he had, because it was so bad that it could only have been left in due to limited choice.

In any case the film is entertaining and quite epic in scale for an action flick - masses of extras, huge set peices... the feeling of chaos and panic was palpable in a lot of scenes.

EDIT: I haven't said enough good things, upon re-reading! The first action sequence was absolutely brilliant, and I don't think it could have been better. Throughout the entire film, the cinematography, stunt work, CG - everything was completely awesome. I just had a look through IMDB's 'Goofs' list, and there's a whole heap, including my issue. But really, none of this subtracts from what is a brilliant escapism action flick. One of the best action films I've seen in a long time.

Oh, and everyone was running Hollywood OS! My favourite OS! The OS that doesn't exist anywhere, ever, except in the movies, where things need to look flashy and convey the information the audience needs to know, like how long the download has left to go, or how long until everything fucking explodes... shit like that. The OS that is SO damn cool, only Hollywood can use it.

Worth a watch on the big screen if you're an action-flick fan.

Swamped with work at the moment, but I wanna make a quick post.

Went out with Geoff last night to the IMAX and watched '300'. It was the first time Geoff had been to IMAX, but the second time both of us had watched the movie - I watched it in a regular cinema back home with my old man, and he watched it on his PC on a small screen. So seeing at IMAX was pretty cool and we both enjoyed it.

I ate way too much food yesterday. In the afternoon Adeline and I went down to Brunswick Street for brunch, where I had a massive plate of French Toast covered with maple syrup and a side order of bacon, washed down with a banana/caramel milkshake. What I couldn't finish, I gave to Adeline, and took her massive bowl of fries. It was a great brunch. Cheap too. I can now recommend "Joe's Garage".

Shortly after was when we found out about Geoff booking his return flight for the wrong day, so he had to book another flight for the Sunday, and then THAT flight being cancelled. So he trekked back to my place and I let him get angry with God of War for a while before we made plans to go to the IMAX.

Before the IMAX though, we stopped off at LAMBS KEBABS. I've probably not spoken much here about Lambs, but it's a bit of a local legend with us. They have excellent kebabs, and they're always open after shows and concerts and whatnot, and a great place to stop on the way home after a big night.

Anyway, I was full from the brunch and all the beer we'd been drinking before we left the house. What I wanted was a mixed kebab, but I made the mistake of asking for 'Double Meat', which is what I thought it was. The kebab I got - well. Let's just say we were making jokes like "Which tree did they cut down and wrap up to make this kebab?" To say it was thick would be an understatement. It wasn't just a kebab, it was an uber kebab. It was King Kebab. It was the Kebab to end all Kebabs. Not even a porn star specialising in deep throating large black men could fit this in her mouth all at once.

I got through 3/4 of it - more than half, it must be re-iterated - and that was a bloody miracle. What I couldn't finish, I binned at the IMAX, and both Geoff and I will attest to the floor actually shaking as it hit the bottom of the bin. I can quite happily say I've been KEBOWNED.

Fuckin' awesome weekend, though.

Anyone on my flist read Eragon, and also seen the movie? I bought the novels, and want to know whether watching the movie BEFORE I read the novel will really spoil it, or if it won't matter all that much. From what I've heard the movie is nowhere near as good as the novel, so I'm currently leaning towards "won't matter much". Also I have two and a half long books to plow through before I get to Paolini's novels, and I'd rather watch the movie sooner than later. :)

I already have a good idea of what [info]graffititype might be going to say, but I still welcome the chance to hear her say it! :D ;)

Calling all lovers of short films!

Happy Days Media Productions cordially invites you to attend the premiere of their first project THE TEN DIMENSIONS.

Directed by Nicholas Clifford and Produced by Michael Ciccone, the 14-minute short film pits right versus wrong, and good versus evil in a dramatic narrative that can only be seen to be explained.
Meet Bronson (Enrico Mammarella), a cold-hearted and calculating murder consultant who specialises in assisting those with...family difficulties.

The very same services which Lucas Montain (David Orlando) has hired, as he plans to exact revenge against his own cheating wife (Ramona Pusch). But he must follow each direction precisely to Bronson's order or risk being caught out by the law.

Yet, there is something in this relationship that is missing. A connection between two people in conversation that only honesty would bring.

Who has reason to lie? What exactly is a murder consultant? And will Mrs. Montain get her just deserts? Only time will tell.
The premiere for THE TEN DIMENSIONS is to be held at Loop Bar on Sunday December 10th, 23 Meyers Place, Melbourne (Melways Ref:1B U6) with doors opening at 7.30pm. Entry is free.

So come join the cast, crew, family and friends as we enjoy a wonderful and entertaining piece of work before it hits the festival circuit at home and abroad.
